EDUCATION
Education Policy

Like most Californians, Ray is a product of public education.  From the time his family moved into Citrus Heights he attended public schools in the San Juan Unified School District, graduating from San Juan High School in 1980.  His four children attended public school as well, with all of them graduating from Casa Roble High School in Orangevale between 2009 and 2015.

We all have a real interest in the success of every student and Ray believes that every child deserves an effective education that prepares them for college or a vocation.  The basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic are necessary to be successful in the world today.  Critical thinking skills will allow the next generation to navigate the complex world of the 21st Century.

California must also ensure that children with special needs are provided access to opportunities and education that will allow them to achieve a high level of success.

As parents and guardians, we must be actively engaged with our children’s education.  We are the first and most important educators of our children and we must take responsibility for knowing what is being taught in their schools.  With everything that goes on in life, it is a challenge to keep up with what is going on in our schools.  Therefore, schools must provide complete and understandable education plans and course descriptions to parents and guardians.

Schools should not disguise their classroom contents with complex references to the education code.  Instead, when parents have questions about what is being taught, timely responses from teachers, administrators, and school boards are necessary and appropriate.

Charter Schools are an important part of the Public Education System in California.  About 11% of students attend charter schools.  Working within the framework provided in AB1505, Charter Schools will continue to offer enhanced educational opportunities to families looking for an alternative to traditional public schools.
