I urge you to ask yourself two fundamental questions:
- Are you better off today than you were 10 years ago?
- Is California better off today than it was 10 years ago?
Short term value and long term impacts must be considered for every new law. Short term value and long term impacts should also be considered for old laws. It is the job of the legislative branch to ensure that laws that were a good idea at the time, or perhaps an experiment in the “Laboratories of Democracy” are constantly under review. And, when it is clear they no longer provide short term or long term value, they are changed.
Sometimes a law is relatively simple and direct. More often, it is very complex and policy details are left to unelected bureaucrats who interpret the letter of the law and the will of the elected officials to shape the impact of how those laws will affect the people of the state. Legislative oversight of laws, and a willingness to “rein in” the bureaucracy are critical to a functioning democracy.
